How to Exfoliate with Sensitive, Dry Skin

Those with sensitive, dry skin may steer clear of traditional exfoliation, or anything that promises "exfoliation" altogether due to some products irritating the skin even worse, or drying it out further. This is a know issue with persons who have sensitive dry skin and seek an option for brighter, smoother skin.

Why is exfoliating important?
Exfoliation is the process of essentially shedding the old for the new. Exfoliating helps to slough off dead skin cells in order to promote healthy cell regeneration or skin cell turnover. Both of these terms are used interchangeably, but they both mean the rate at which new, healthier cells appear that result in healthier skin and supposedly stronger barrier.

However, sometimes, the dead skin cells do not always shed the way they're supposed to as some stay on the skin. This results in dull, uneven skin, and the reason why some products cannot penetrate the way they're supposed to. Sometimes, this also results in further inflammation as those dead skin cells sit atop the new ones, and traps dirt and oil in between.

The Problem with Exfoliating Dry Skin
Most times, exfoliants are harsh or abrasive. Some chemical exfoliants such as glycolic or lactic acid can be too strong for skin that is both sensitive and dry and may cause further irritation, especially without buffers.

On the other hand, physical exfoliants can be too abrasive, damaging the skin with microscopic tears and resulting in over-exfoliation, i.e. scrubs or exfoliating brushes. The over-exfoliation results in burns to the skin which leaves scarring––also something we want to avoid as much as possible as the breaks the skin's barrier even further and takes a while for your skin to recover.

Those with dry skin already experience a lack of hydration (dehydrated skin) and moisture (inability to produce a healthy amount of natural sebum). The issue arises when dry skin needs to exfoliate as well, but don't have many options as most conventional formulations and devices can do more harm than good.

How We Solve This Issue
With our products, we formulate specifically for sensitive, dry skin, creating alternatives that are safe for our skin's needs while also getting the same benefits and nurture rather than torture.

How do we do this? For example, with our Savant Créme Cleanser with 5% Lactic Acid, we've enveloped this formula in Kokum Butter, Guava Oil, and Ximenia Oils. They're emollients, which is essentially a moisturizer. These ingredients help to soften the skin, which is why the formula is non-drying or stripping. As you're cleansing, your skin is being nourished as well by these oils, which in turn helps to keep skin bouncy and refreshed, without the squeaky-clean feel.

The delivery system by use of Dimethyl Isosorbide, helps to deliver the active, which is lactic acid, at a lower percentage rate to help mitigate and reduce irritation and sensitivity.

Dimethyl Isosorbide delivers actives to the deeper layers of skin, allowing actives to actually penetrate the way they're supposed to. This is why we only use 5% lactic acid. The lower percentage rate is still effective, thus allowing for those with sensitive, dry skin to reap the benefits of daily exfoliation for healthy, glowing skin, promoting even skin tone, without risking skin's barrier or further sensitivity.

If you're facing sensitive, dry skin but longing for the benefits of exfoliation, we've got the cleanser for you. Our Savant Cream Cleanser with 5% Lactic Acid is perfect as an everyday cleanser while gently removing dead skin cells and revealing healthier, smoother skin visibly in one week.
